Face the Music

Apparently, the expression “Face the Music,” began centuries ago in the country of
China. The emperor had a massive orchestra that performed year-round at public
festivals and private concerts for the court.
It was a tremendous honor to be selected for that particular orchestra. It was a lifetime
career that came with all kinds of benefits and a great salary. And on top of all that, it
gave musicians high esteem in the community.
But as the story goes, one such member was an imposter. Truth be known, he did not
have much musical training but somehow used his connections to gain a seat in the
flute section. Whenever the orchestra would practice or perform, he would just hold up
his flute to his lips and pretend to play.
But folks began to suspicion that he was a fake. So, the emperor announced that every
member of the orchestra had to come before him and perform a solo piece. The
imposter was terrified. He knew that if he was found out, his family would be shamed
and more than likely he would be executed.
So, when the day arrived for his solo, the man hid out and took his own life rather than
be exposed for his hypocrisy. The Chinese noted the situation and began to use the
phrase, “He Refused to Face the Music.”
Unfortunately, that lack of accountability continues to this very day. Our evening
newscasts journal public figure after public figure refusing to “Face the Music.” They
simply avoid taking responsibility for their actions.
And they are not the only ones. Spouses “fudge” in their communication with their wife
or husband. Kids squirm as they try to avoid responsibilities around the house.
Employees duck and weave around the office. Students try to hide their lack of
performance behind all kinds of excuses.
We have a whole society that wants to avoid “Facing the Music.”
Jesus went after this problem in Luke 11. He attacks the pharisees and the experts of
the law. He starts throwing around that heavy Greek word “WOE” as He nails their lack
of accountability and misplaced focus.
So, maybe this week is a good time to review that passage and recalibrate our own
hearts as we assume our responsibilities and “Face the Music.”
