I hate name tags. I am not sure why. Maybe something in my childhood caused me to dislike wearing them. Maybe I didn’t like being easily identified (too much orneriness). Maybe my early work world included awkward introductions based on the info found on those tags. But regardless, I don’t like them at all.
Our church used to have a monthly “Name Tag Sunday.” On that weekend, everyone was encouraged to put on a name tag. You know, the white stickers with blue writing that said, “Hello My Name Is …” In protest, I used to stick the tag upside down, so it was hard to read. (I do struggle with unrepented rebellion!)
But I read a suggestion a few weeks ago (unfortunately I am not sure of the source) that might make me rethink my aversion to those name tags.
The author of this idea proposed that we encourage folks to write a description instead of a name on those tags. For example, we might write “Waiting for Health Test Results;” or maybe we might pen “Frustrated at Work;” or even “Very Poor Self-esteem.”
For those who don’t like writing long sentences, we might just scribble “Worried,” or “Lousy Parent,” or “Can’t Sleep.”
But here’s the best part of this idea, scattered in among the wounded congregation would be a bunch of folks whose name tags read, “Prayer Warrior!”
That way, regardless of how folks came into the building; whatever their pressing burden or fear; they would immediately encounter people who are ready and willing to stop and listen. Those prayer warriors would genuinely express their care and concern. And soon we would see small groups gathered all over the auditorium praying together.
No doubt some of those prayer moments would end in tears. Others might provoke some healthy laughter. And eventually, people would not only get to know each other, they would SHARE and CARE.
We could all echo the words of the apostle Paul when he told the Philippians, “… it was good of you to share in my troubles” (Phil. 4:14).
So, if they break out the blue and white name tags next Sunday, let’s all grin a bunch. And think about something meaningful to share. Mine might read: “Hello My Name is Sherry, and I am a mess.”
What might yours say?
