Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

The human body is an amazing creation. I am told that we can distinguish some 10,000 different smells. The tissue in our brains weighs only 3 pounds, but there are complex interactions of thousands of synapses taking place at nano-speed that allow us to quickly identify the rose we smell.

In a single square inch of skin, there are 450 touch cells that signal the pressure of a friend patting our arm. When we cup our hand over our ear and “hear the ocean,” we are hearing the coursing of blood cells as they rush along the capillaries in our head.

Our brains are so adaptive that when we put glasses on that make the world seem upside down, in just a short period of time, our brains will reinterpret that information and we will perceive the world right side up again.

We are truly fearfully and wonderfully made.

David declared those words in Psalm 139:13-14, “You created my inmost being, you knit us together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

To be created “fearfully,” means to have great reverence, it is a response to something quite amazing. And to be “wonderfully” created means to be set apart, to be uniquely marvelous.

Too often our lives start to have a “ho hum” element to them. We might even start to think that each day is a “same old” day.

So, this week, let’s all stop and truly consider just how special we really are. Those miles and miles of blood vessels carry life to our limbs. As we breathe in and out, we are taking in oxygen and blowing away carbon dioxide. And, our digestive system breaks down our lunches so our body can sustain itself.

We really are fearfully and wonderfully made. Our heavenly Father is amazingly creative…thank Him!
