Honoring Veterans

A few years back, a Civil War soldier’s remains were found at the site of the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee. Although those who reburied him knew neither his name nor even which side he fought on, they honored him with a horse-drawn carriage draped with both Confederate and Union flags and gave him a proper burial.

That little story causes me to stop and remember, to remember the sacrifice that thousands of men and women have made on behalf of our country. Nationally, that is why we set aside November 11th as Veteran’s Day, and I am so glad we do.

This day of honor started as a celebration of the end of World War I (Armistice Day), but it became a national day in which to honor all veterans in 1954. Memorial Day focuses esteem and appreciation for those who have died for our country. But Veteran’s Day is meant to honor everyone who has worn our military uniform.

It is a day for me to honor my father and my uncle and my next-door neighbor. And I am sure you have Veterans in your life too.  Our children need to hear about these “everyday heroes.”  This week is a wonderful opportunity to sit those folks down and draw out their stories (maybe even record them!).

When you think about it, their lives reflect service and sacrifice. And boy does our culture need lessons on those topics! Our veterans help us foster a love for country, a sense of humility in service and a willingness to sacrifice for someone else.

Veteran’s Day is a “moment” set aside so our entire citizenry can pause and show appreciation for all the sailors, soldiers, airmen and coastguard vets that have proudly worn a uniform. Some carried a rifle, some drove a tank, others flew a plane and still others sat in hot musty offices administrating the finest military in the world.

And don’t forget, some of them are still serving. So, if you see a Vet “out and about”, don’t forget to thank them for their service. If you do not have a family member to honor, maybe you can drop a note of appreciation off at a neighbor’s door. Or get involved with a civic organization that honors local military units (most cities have them).

However you choose to do it, please find a Veteran this week and give them a heartfelt thank you. They stood (or still stand) in the gap for us.

Let’s give “honor to whom honor is due…” (Rom. 13:7)
