A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Can’t Walk and Chew Gum at the Same Time
A new study out found that people who are reading their phones or trying to send texts will find their walking gait disrupted. The study conducted in Australia found that these multitaskers unwittingly swerve off a straight line. "Their heads did...
We Are. We Become.
Like most folks I had a rather stereotypical impression of Peter. As a rough fisherman, he is brought to Christ by his brother Andrew (John 1) and seems to almost immediately embark on a journey fraught with impulsiveness. He rebukes Christ as He...
The Good Old Days
A friend recently gave me a book written by Hyatt Moore entitled, It's About Life. In that book there is a short chapter that reflects on the "good old days." Hyatt called my attention to the verse in Eccl.7:10 that says, "Do not say, 'Why were the...
Read Through Your Bible This Year
At the start of a new year, lots of resolutions are made, including the commitment to read through the Bible in one year. And I have a few suggestions along those lines. First off, consider how much time it actually takes to read through the entire...
Choose Another Street
This time of year, we are all tempted to make resolutions. We are going to work out more, eat less, read more, watch TV less and on and on goes the list. It is sad, but experts tell us that those kinds of resolutions made in January are usually...
God is “Sneaky”
I love sports stories that reinforce the goodness of God. I heard one last week and want to share it. It has to do with the "sneakiness" of God. Of course He is not sneaky in the traditional sense of that term. I mean that He will move things...
Believers Argue with God – Skeptics Argue with Each Other
Too often you and I look at prayer as if it were really good room service. When we pray, we expect immediate results, results in our favor. Biblical prayer though is much more like an ongoing meaningful conversation between two friends who are...
Where are all the Gentlemen?
With the 50th anniversary of John Kennedy's death upon us, there have been all kinds of behind the scene accounts written. One of them had to do with the Zapruder's film. Apparently, within hours of the President's death, the staff of Life magazine...
Be Precise with Your Words
I recently found an old illustration that drives home the point that we must be precise with our words. And it made me laugh out loud. The article said, "A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying...
Things I learned on My Trip to Afghanistan
Each summer, as finances will allow, I try to travel somewhere new. And on my way back from those adventures I always ask myself a few questions...things like "What was your favorite memory?" or "What was different than you expected?" or "What did...
International School of Kabul
If you follow me on Twitter ( @sherryworel), you know that I just returned from a whirlwind trip to Dubai and Afghanistan. Boy, those two worlds could not be any further apart. I spent just one full day in Dubai and found it fascinating. It is the...
