A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Living in the Present
For most of us, English grammar is a challenge. It is particularly difficult when we start considering the various tenses associated with our language. By most counts, there are 12 different tenses for English verbs. The easy ones are the simple...
Time for C.S. Lewis
Among the reasons I love summer is the profound gift of time...time to read. As I was organizing my vacation reading material on my Kindle, I noticed that I did not have any C. S Lewis books "teed up." Summer cannot be summer without a new look at...
Christian Schools Aren’t the Answer
I have invested more than thirty years in Christian school education. During that time, my fellow school workers and I have influenced over 3000 children ages 5-13. I am deeply committed to the imprint Christian schools can and do have on the lives...
Persecuted Christians
Last week CNN ran a story about Christians being tortured in the Sinai. It stated that Bedouin tribes are conducting human trafficking trade on a massive scale and they are focused on Christians. It hardly seems possible that as I sit here is a...
Writing Your Own Obituary
While waiting for a flight a few weeks ago, I happened to pick up The Arizona Republic newspaper. And as it usually happens, the part I got stuck with was the back section; no news, no sports. But I did have the obituaries. On a whim, I started...
Stradivarius Violins
Joe Stowell tells a story on one of his online daily devotionals about the uniqueness of Stradivarius violins. He indicates that Stradivarius lived in a small Italian village in the 1700s. "Since he was too poor to buy fine wood for his violins, he...
With a Fishing Pole in my Hand
One of my favorite all time book titles is Everything I Needed to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten. Well, by the time you are reading these words, I should be standing in a stream in Colorado with a fishing pole in my hand. So, maybe there is a...
Fans Gone Amok
I love sports. I love competition. I love my Bruin basketball team. But I am thinking that the competitive spirit has gone a bit too far! I offer as evidence, the Alabama football fan who recently pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful damage to a...
Cursing Before Learning to Read
Apparently there is a new book out, entitled Holy S***: A Brief History of Swearing. The author, Melissa Mohr states that English speakers punctuate their language with an expletive about every 140 words spoken. That makes foul language as popular...
Raising Responsible Kids (Being Responsible Adults)
In a little town outside Madrid, the city leaders launched a campaign to crack down on irresponsible dog owners. They had a team of volunteers wandering the city streets on the lookout for anyone who failed to scoop up after their dog. These...
Give Me Your Eyes
Mother Teresa served the "poorest of the poor" in Calcutta, India. Apparently every morning, her ministry would send ambulances to the train station to pick up the dying that had been abandoned there over night. "One night they found a man in...
The Bare Necessities
Did you know that there is a washer and dryer set with a smart electrical meter installed that will automatically determine the most economical time of the day to start your wash? And, if you do not trust the computer to make the judgments, you can...
