Perception

I recently read about an experiment that was conducted by Robert Kleck in the 1980s called the Dartmouth Scar Experiment. It focused on the power of perception over reality.

The folks that participated were told that a huge scar was going to be painted on their face and with that impediment, they were going to engage in a series of interviews. But without their knowledge, the scars were secretly removed.

After the interviews, the participants were asked about the experience. Their responses were very negative. They thought they had been treated differently because of their scars. They felt judged. But remember, no interviewer ever saw a scar, they had been secretly removed.

Don’t miss the amazing truth associated with this experiment, perception often trumps reality.

You and I didn’t participate in that study, but we do struggle with self-esteem issues and way too often our own perceptions about our physical appearance, weight, body image, social skills, and life experiences trip us up.

We believe that others are viewing us in a certain way, and we respond accordingly, even though in reality, there isn’t a “scar.”

So, this week let’s remember that God defines who we are. Our perceptions are not reliable. Our discernments are too often eschewed by circumstances we do not control. Our sensitivities make us way too vulnerable to quiet attacks from within.

Instead, let’s focus on Biblical statements regarding our value and worth. They are the keys to a healthy self-image. They are facts, not perception.

We are created in His image: Gen. 1:26-27

We are His kids: I John 3:1

We are accepted in the beloved: Eph. 1:6

We will NEVER be rejected: Ps. 94:14

Ps. 119:114 drives our attention to the scriptures. In them, we find our source of healthy self-esteem: “You are my refuge and shield. Your Word is my source of hope.”

Scars (real or imagined) don’t count!
