Summer is a great time to ponder the truth that Jesus is the source of all life. Since the days are longer and the sun stays hotter, we tend to be outside more often. BBQs let us linger on the patio engaged in fun conversation with family and friends. Vacations give us the opportunity to wander in mountains or deserts or along the beach.

And those more relaxed moments give us the chance to contemplate the vastness of the universe we live in. In Anne Graham Lotz’s book, Just Give Me Jesus, she remarks, “Our sun is so massive that 1.2 million planets the size of earth could fit inside it, leaving room for 4.3 million moons. Our sun is the nearest star to our planet; the next nearest star is four times larger than our sun!”

She goes on to say, “Our galaxy includes more than 100 billion stars, and the last observation said our galaxy is only one of more than 100 billion galaxies!”

We live on a tiny speck of dirt, spinning through a universe that is so vast we cannot even fathom its limitations. All of which Jesus created. He is the source of all life.

Colossians chapter one tells us that: “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Col. 1:15-16).

And the Psalmist assures us that “He determines the number of the stars and calls them by name” (Ps. 147:4).

Can you imagine? Jesus calls each star by name! (And I have trouble remembering the name of the lady who routinely sits in the row in front of me at church. Ugh.)

Contemplating the truth that Jesus is the source of all life ought to bring us such comfort and peace. We are not in control (of anything, really), but we can revel in our security. We are delighted that He is in control. He is the foundation of our world. 

“He covers the sky with clouds; He supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills” (Ps. 147:8).

This week, you and I can assure ourselves of that truth with a simple walk outside, especially at night. Check out the stars. Remind yourself that this is His world. We just get to live in it.

He is the source of all life!
