Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

We are Rich!
According to CNNMoney, it only takes $34,000 per person to be among the richest 1% of the people in the world. That figure is after taxes. So a family of four would have to earn $136,000 to be in that category. And, it seems that half of these rich...
Time for a Hug
During the last few months of Jesus' ministry on earth (during the Perean Ministry), our Lord addressed several very important topics. He prophesied about His coming sufferings, He discoursed on the topic of divorce, and told the story about the...
Sword of Damocles
Cicero, a Roman orator and statesman wrote about the sword of Damocles. Translated by N.S. Gill, the story goes like this: "Dionysius (II) was a fourth century B.C. tyrant of Syracuse, in the Greek area of southern Italy. To all appearances,...
Purposeful Shoe Drive
In January of each year, our school has its annual shoe drive. It started over twenty years ago as I was searching for some local service projects for the kids to participate in. We decided to gather gently used shoes (most of our kids just out...
The Spiritual Lives of Teachers (and other spiritual leaders)
I have the great privilege of leading an incredibly wonderful Christian school system. We have a preschool, two elementary schools and a junior high. About 70 people serve on our two campuses. And I have deep respect and appreciation for all of...
Taking Responsibility
On Labor Day weekend, a retired NFL football player, Ryan Holloway had his home in upstate New York trashed by 300 teenagers. They spray painted the walls, peed on the floor, broke furniture and fixtures. All total, there was about $20,000 worth of...
The Majesty of God
This summer I had the great privilege to visit British Columbia and spend some time at Lake Louise (outside of Banff.) This unbelievably gorgeous "alpine" lake sits nestled in the Canadian Rockies. One afternoon I watched the clouds roll in and...
Giving Credit Where Credit is Due
I was observing in one of our elementary classrooms this week and heard the teacher say something new-well, it was new to me. She was asking open ended questions about a geography lesson and had the students discuss their answers with their...
Pregnant with Twins (and hating it!)
An anonymous post on Babble.com reflected a couple's reaction that recently discovered that they are expecting twin boys: "We are pissed and pregnant with twins." Apparently this "pushing forty" year old couple had struggled to get pregnant for...
Emergency Calls
There was a report out recently from London's Fire Brigade. It seems that in 2010 there were some 1300 "trapped or stuck" incidents and each incident cost the city about $445. I laughed at the kinds of predicaments that required the fire department...
Perspectives on Death
Last week, a 37 year old Ohio auto mechanic was declared dead by his medical team. His heart had stopped beating for over 45 minutes. As the nurses were preparing his body for the family to say their last goodbyes, Tony Yahle suddenly started...
I’m With Him!
In the summer between my junior and senior year of high school, my family and I moved to Cornwall, England. My father was stationed at a Royal Air Force base near the little town of Newquay. A few months after we arrived, my dad came home with the...
