Our Heavenly Father is Listening

Several times this last week I heard a common refrain on the telephone. As I waited for my party to answer, I heard “this call may be recorded for quality assurance.” Now I am not sure what kind of quality assurance is required from a doctor’s office, a bank or a phone company but at the very least, I knew someone might be listening.

It reminded me of that movie out a few months ago called “Eagle Eye” where a massive computer monitored and manipulated the lives of several innocent folks.

And while I was pondering the whole idea of someone knowing all about my personal business, I got an email from a company offering a real time GPS service for parents to use on their teenager’s car. Apparently you can purchase a device that will let you know (in real time) not only where your child is at all times, but when he or she leaves the car. You can even pre-program a given area within which they are allowed to drive and then the device will alert you if they leave that confined area.

Now, the people marketing the GPS suggested that the devise would allow the parents to be proactive and involved in their teenager’s life. And I know the phone answering recordings were only trying to improve services rendered. But, I am thinking that all this access to the details of our lives might not be all that good. Truth is; the value of such insight will entirely depend on the character and intent of the “listener.”

Which got me to thinking about Psalm 139 and the way God is watching over me. David starts this song of praise with the words, “O Lord you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise, you perceive my thought from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down, you are familiar with all my ways.”

Now there is an “eagle eye” that I am grateful for! The almighty creator of the whole universe is intent on knowing my thoughts. He is aware of my actions, and He is very familiar with all the nuances of my life. And He uses all that information for my good. Like David I can declare, “…your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

So next time, a phone recording indicates that your call is being monitored, be reminded that our heavenly Father is doing some monitoring of His own.
