A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Keep it in Perspective
I am reading a very good book entitled Killing Christians by Tom Doyle. I would highly recommend it. It tells a series of stories about real people all around the world who endure unimaginable circumstances and yet still serve the Lord with amazing...
Sorry, God DOES Give Us More Than WE Can Handle
We all love to quote sayings from books and movies. They get repeated over and over until we all believe they are factual renderings. Example: “Play it again, Sam.” Unfortunately though, Rick never says that in the movie, Casablanca. We have some...
Loneliness
There have been several science fiction movies in the last few years that focused on the subject of humans having real relationships with robots. “Ex Machina” and “Her” come to mind. Apparently it is a semi-serious topic among young people. So much...
My Hiding Place
Everyone needs a hiding place. When we are verbally attacked, we need a safe emotional corner to rest in as we consider the source. When we are confused, frustrated and befuddled, we need a calm space and time to think. When we hurt, we all need a...
Value of Life
Canada has recently proposed an assisted suicide bill that would let terminally ill patients take their own lives. Beyond the obvious theological issues, I was taken back by the clarification that the bill would oppose “suicide tourism.” That is,...
Skipping Work
In February of this year, a 69-year-old Spanish man was fired after his employers discovered that he hadn’t actually shown up to work for at least the past 6 years! But the best part of the story is how they figured out he was shirking his...
How Long, Lord?
In Revelation Chapter 6, the souls of those who have been slain because of the Word of God cry out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” That verse came...
“I Have Seen the Lord”
This is the time of the year when so many of us read and reread the Biblical account of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. This year, a phrase jumped off the page and hit me right between my proverbial eyes. It is in John 20 in the section...
Let’s Revive a Dirty Word
Years ago, my goddaughter came home and declared that the kids at school were using the “S” word. Since I am the superintendent of that school, I got the hackles up on the back of my neck and demanded to know who was using such a dirty word. As I...
Packing our Coffins
Apparently, when early missionaries were sent to Africa, many of them packed and shipped all their belongings and supplies in a coffin. At the end of their lives, those same coffins were used for the missionary’s own burial. You talk about...
Stephen, Please Call Your Mom
Recently, some handmade cardboard signs have been popping up around the train station in San Juan Capistrano. They very simply say “Stephen, please call your mom.” Now I have no idea who Stephen is, no idea about his age or the circumstances that...
