Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

The Crisis of Biblical Illiteracy
Historically, literature and other media expressions have drawn heavily from the scriptures. Unfortunately, our culture is becoming more and more biblically illiterate and we miss the intended reference. The BBC radio website has a brief survey to...
Weird (and not so weird) Laws
As you read this, Lord willing I am traveling in Ireland. Foreign travel is wonderful fun, but it does have some challenges. It is especially important to be aware of any "strange" laws that you might inadvertently violate. Did you know that it is...
Silly Remarks
Last November, believing that they were living on the wrong side of history, the editors of the Harrisburg Patriot and Union newspaper retracted an important editorial that had been first printed in 1863. Their retraction read in part, "Seven score...
A Call to Action
I believe that most Christians know about Meriam Ibrahim. Perhaps not by name, but you know her story. She is the Sudanese woman who was sentenced to death for the crime of allegiance to Christ. She was raised a Christian by her mother, but her...
Watching You
A school board in Florida wants to set a dress code for parents. One of the members of that board, Dr. Rosalind Osgood is concerned about the saggy pants that expose dads' underwear and moms who wear curlers in their hair as they drop kids off for...
Practice Makes Perfect
When the Beatles came to America in 1964, I was one of those screaming teenage girls greeting their arrival. I wasn't at the airport, but you should have heard me as they sang on the Ed Sullivan show. (Those of you under the age of 50 can just look...
Consoling One Another
Did you know that elephants not only recognize each other, but they also have specific ways to comfort one another? Apparently they do that comforting by some reassuring touches, some chirping noises and physically gathering around in a kind of...
Revive Us Again
I love hymns and I love the stories behind them. Books like Great Hymns and their Stories, Stories Behind the Hymns that Inspire America, A Hymn is Born and Hymns that Live adorn my bookshelves and bless my heart. The other day a friend sent along...
He Waited For Me
Since I work with children, it will come as no surprise that I enjoy children's stories. Peter Pan is one of my favorites. At one point when Peter is worried about losing his relationship with Tinker Bell, she assures him that they can always be...
Coins and Giving
A parking meter officer in Westchester, New York got arrested recently for stealing coins. It seems that over a 15-year period of time, he practiced the Kindergartener's approach to sharing: "one for you, one for me, one for you, one for me." The...
The Man Who Refused the Pardon
On one of his recent radio broadcasts, Pastor Skip Heitzig made a reference to a man who was condemned to die for his crimes, received a pardon but refused that pardon. I was intrigued so I went looking for some details. It seems that in December...
A Wearable Book
Students and researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created an amazing new book. Using a combination of sensors implanted in a vest, the reader of this new book experiences various vibration patterns. As you read along, you...
