Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Best Friends
As I write this note, my dear friend of 32 years is finalizing the details for his move out of state. Dennis Bock has been the Assistant Superintendent of Stoneybrooke Christian Schools since our inception. All along the way, he has worked so...
Borrowing Grief We Don’t Have To
As I am writing this note I am 39,000 feet up in the air en route to Dallas. As we did the rocket take off from John Wayne airport, my view of the coast line was stunning. There were no clouds to obscure my vista. The ocean was a variegated...
God with Us, Us with Them
As a kid growing up in Hawaii, I heard a lot about the story of Father Damien. In 1864, he left his native country of Belgium and began to serve as a Catholic missionary on the island of Oahu. In 1873 he arrived on the island of Molokai to serve...
Are You Looking Forward to Heaven?
Every so often, the news outlets carry a story about someone coming back from the dead. A couple of months ago, there was a story about a man in Ohio who had a heart attack and experienced about 45 minutes without a heart-rate, pulse or any blood...
Nail Houses
I recently read an article about the “nail houses” in China. These houses are located in an area of construction and development. However, the owner has refused to accept any form of compensation that was offered by road builders or other land...
Becoming a Person of Refuge
I am fascinated with the details associated with the six cities of refuge outlined in the book of Numbers. In short, those cities were designated as “safe zones” for Israelites who were in danger. Perhaps they were accused of accidentally killing a...
Dance of the Porcupines
John Ortberg in his book, Everybody is Normal Till You Get to Know Them offers some interesting insight into the world of porcupines. Apparently they are part of the rodent family. (I don’t like them already!) Their Latin name literally means, “the...
Dumb Things We Study
The University of Pennsylvania has a new college course. It is called “Wasting time on the Internet.” A student taking that course will be required to stare at a computer screen for three hours and will only be allowed to interact through chat...
Ugly Meter
Can you believe it? There are apps for our phones that can rate the attractiveness of people around us. There is an “Ugly Meter”, an “Ugly Test”, an “Ugly Scan”, and even an app called “Old and Ugly.” These apps allow folks to scan a person’s face...
After You Hung Up, the Lord said He Loved You
Right now, my personal prayer list includes a friend with a recently diagnosed life changing major illness, a girl friend who can’t leave her house because of the needs of her mother, two teenage friends who had car accidents this week, a colleague...
The Period
Not long ago, I heard some thoughts at church that impacted me greatly. The speaker has a strong background in the languages of the Bible. She brought our attention to the punctuation in a very well known passage of scripture. It is the story in...
