Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Our Master’s Voice
In Galatians 5, the apostle Paul declares that we were all called to be free, free from the power of sin. He adds, “So I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the...
The Living Room
Robert Boyd Munger has an article entitled, “My Heart, Christ’s Home.” Using a simple analogy (his heart as the Lord’s home), he talks about what true devotion really is like. He focused on an “drawing room.” We would call it the living room....
I am Known by Him
I got to thinking about some celebrities and famous people that I have had to pleasure to “meet.” Once on vacation in Hawaii, I had a momentary chance conversation with the sports caster, Jim Nance (a very nice guy by the way). As a teenager, I...
Kissed Him Much
Everyone sems to be familiar with the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15. But recently I came across a copy of a message by Charles Spurgeon that he entitled, “Prodigal Love for the Prodigal Son.” He preached that message in March of...
The Banquet Table
Years ago, I read a great story about a young man who left the “old country” and sailed to America looking for a new life in the “New World.” (I think the story came from Sanders’ book, Enjoying Intimacy with God.) “Before he left, his father...
Basketball and Character
A week or so ago, we finished off the season for college basketball (“March Madness”). It is my favorite sporting event of the year. And UCLA has been my team since the early 70s. In part, it is because of the incredible testimony of John Wooden,...
Who or What Killed Jesus?
By the time you read this, we will have celebrated Easter. And prayerfully yours involved a whole lot more than cute bunnies and chocolate candy. (Although I sure hope the Reese’s Peanut Butter “eggs” are still in the store!) But I have continued...
The Mystery Box
Like most kids, I peppered my parents, (mostly my dad) with an endless array of pointed questions. We would be in the car driving somewhere and I would start. “How come the sky is blue? What makes it possible for the planes to take off? Why do the...
Is God in Your Boat?
Mark Creech recently wrote an article for The Christian Post entitled, “Is God Asleep in your Boat?” And I loved it. He was referring to the story that appears in three of the gospels, but I like the account in Luke 8. Jesus said to His disciples,...
Reach Out and Listen
This morning, I read an article that was printed in the Wall Street Journal. I am not sure of the date of the incident, but I found it to be extraordinarily upsetting. It has to do with an ongoing two-month exchange between a 36-year-old Florida...
