A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

The Dog Ate It
Being a school administrator, I thought I had heard all the classic “The Dog Ate It” stories. But not too long ago I saw a brief article that told of a 3 year old Great Dane that was hospitalized in Portland, Oregon. It seems that when they opened...
The Year of “Shalom”
I am suggesting that we all declare 2015 the year of Shalom. I got the idea from Jon Wallace, the President of Azusa Pacific University. This fall, he led the APU community into an intentional “rhythm of life that provides for both a passion for...
Migdal Eder
Every year at Christmas and Easter, Pastors and Bible teachers scramble to find a new and interesting way to look at these familiar scriptural accounts. In that spirit, I would invite you to consider the crucial role Migdal Eder played in the birth...
Cancelling Christmas
John and Lisa Henderson live in Utah. They have three sons ages 5, 8 and 11. And according to a story in CNN Living, their boys have had a real problem with their behavior. Specifically, they have been disrespectful and acting very entitled. The...
This is My Story
One of my favorite old hymns is Fannie Crosby’s “Blessed Assurance.” The first verse says, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Oh what a foretaste of glory divine. Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His spirit, washed in His blood.” And the...
Encouragement vs. Praise
One of our elementary boys football teams lost every game this year. They were on the young side, had no experience and tended to enjoy each other’s company much more than learning football fundamentals. After the last game, one of the boys gave...
Say Something Nice…
We are all celebrating Thanksgiving this week. The holiday comes with incredible food, a break from work, some wonderful football games and of course the onslaught of relatives! But just the thought of Aunt Suzie and Uncle Fred verbally “mixing it...
Good Manners
If you look up “chivalry” in the dictionary, you will find definitions that highlight the qualities idealized by knighthood. You will see things listed like bravery, courtesy, honor and gallantry. And boy does our society need more of all that! A...
Before I Die…
Our society has ongoing dialogs about death and dying. Earlier this year there was a flurry of articles about the ways and means that various states execute prisoners on death row. Another article highlighted the changing dress code associated with...
Pearly Gates
It was well past 3:00 am the other morning when my body finally allowed me to trudge off to sleep. I had been having another “tete-a-tete” with some real pain, the kind that hurts. “It just isn’t fair” slides so easily off my tongue. This mess has...
Be Thou My Vision
My first encounter with a “heads up display” happened in an airplane simulator. A friend and I used to go ”fly” navy jets for fun. In order to win the aerial battle, you had to master the heads up display. And so I have been watching with some...
