Monday Musings

A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Christian Liberty – It’s the Pits!
We’d been sitting in a restaurant for 2 or 3 hours, just catching up on the highs and lows in each other’s lives, when all of a sudden, my single and suffering friend blurted out at me, “This business of Christian liberty is the pits!” Apparently,...
It Depends…
A while back, I visited a site that offered creative thinking puzzles. One of them was called “The Drop the Block Problem.” It showed a stick figured man holding a block of wood and it asked the question, “What will happen to the piece of wood when...
Passing Along a Word from Our Father
A few years ago during the height of the war in Afghanistan, a cool thing happened in the Atlanta airport. As a group of young soldiers were making their way through the terminal in their camouflaged uniforms, a little girl, maybe 6 or 7 years old...
Easy Isn’t Always Better
A recent FAA study found that pilots are losing their “edge.” Their flying skills are being eroded because they are “under-challenged.” It seems that modern planes are now equipped in such a way that they literally almost fly themselves. Pilots are...
Over Protecting Our Kids
Not long ago I read an article in an English online paper about a Polish priest who was warning parents to be on their guard against Lego toys. He was warning them that those “plastic bricks are a tool of Satan and can destroy children’s souls.”...
Stuffing Our Faces
Stuffing Our Faces A while back, Time Magazine identified some very wacky eating records. In Texas, a 125 lb. mother ate two 72-oz. steaks with a baked potato, roll, shrimp cocktail and a salad all in less than 15 minutes holds one record. Other...
Worrying: The Royal Road to Misery
I have been doing some research for a speaking event coming up soon and I came across one writer’s rules for being a worrier. I have slightly adapted Robert L. Leahy thoughts: If something bad can happen, then it is your responsibility to worry...
I Saw God Today
I listen to country and western music on my car radio and so I get what I consider daily spurts of “down home insights” into Godly living. One of those “spurts” came on the radio this morning. It was a George Strait song called, “I Saw God Today.”...
I have an Addiction (Do You?)
Last week a friend of mine sat me down and made me watch the last ten minutes of Dr. Oz’s TV show. It was an intervention of sorts. During that segment, Dr. Oz was discussing how some folks are addicted to lip balm and he was highlighting the kinds...
Lessons Learned After Being Pickpocketed
A week ago last Friday I was in the Paris airport at the tail end of an amazing 17-day trip to Ireland and Normandy. I had turned in a rented car and was going to take the train on into town for a couple days. The airport was not air-conditioned....
A World Christian
As I write this musing, I am just finishing up a 9 day visit to Ireland. I head to France tomorrow for a visit to Normandy. As you might expect, I have been following (with much interest) the news stories of the day. In Dublin, the main topic has...
An Interesting Fact
Recently a friend turned me on to some interesting facts reported by Science World. Did you know that you and I have 20 square feet of skin? We eat 430 bugs each year. (Not sure who is counting.) We swallow a liter of snot every day. (Not sure of a...
