A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

It Takes Time
An article in the recent New Tribes Missions newsletter was making a point about how long it takes to complete a modern English language translation of the Bible. Apparently the New International Version took a full 8 years to finish. The New King...
Looking for Good Leaders
In 1790, Abigail Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson and said, “These are the hard times in which a genius would wish to live. Great necessities call forth great leaders.” Well, that need is certainly still true today. Our country is desperate for...
Endless Praise
Every Christian has their favorite devotional. As I glance over at my bookshelf, I see devotionals by Chambers, Foster, Spurgeon, Cowman, Swindoll and Tozer. But my all time favorite is a little book of puritan prayers called The Valley of Vision....
Consternation at the Conventions
About the time you will be ready this musing, it will be time for the national political conventions in our country. In my lifetime, I don’t remember a more contentious approach to those events for either party. Seems like everywhere we turn there...
Panting for God’s Word
Every time I get a nasty cold, I have some problems with my asthma. Inevitably, upon exertion, I start the “asthma pant.” It’s that pursed lips thing that you do trying to suck the last bit of oxygen out of every breath. I am grateful that that...
My Cup Overflows
Psalm 23 is an incredible source of comfort for the believer. It makes a number of strong statements of relief and provision. In the context of preparing a table for me in the presence of my enemies and anointing my head with oil, the psalmist...
Proud to be a Christian (and an American)
Likely as you read these words, it is July 4th, the celebration of the birth of our nation. In the summer of 1776, the Second Continental Congress met and on July 2nd, they voted on a resolution declaring our independence from Great Britain. Two...
The Size of Home Plate (and other non-negotiables)
I read a story in social media about a motivational speaker (John Scolinos) who spoke to a large convention of baseball coaches. Apparently, he started his talk by asking how wide the home plate is in Little League. The participants answered,...
Restraining Order Against God
A few weeks ago, an Israeli man presented a petition in a local court asking for a restraining order against God. He claimed that the Lord had been particularly unkind to him over the last three years. It was interesting to note that God did not...
Our Source of Comfort
This past weekend, I had to jump on a plane to Denver to care for my Dad who had a stroke. It was a pretty stressful few days interfacing with doctors, therapists and hospital staff. I wanted to make sure he was receiving excellent care. I was...
Thy Word Have I Hid in My Heart
After World War II, there was a concerted effort to reunite displaced Jewish children with their parents or relatives. Thousands of kids were hidden from the Nazis on farms, in cellars and in convents all across Europe. A particular Rabbi, Eliezer...
Hearing (and responding) to God’s Voice
Some recent neurological studies out of Stanford suggest that when a mother speaks, a kid’s brain will light up like a Christmas tree. Apparently it takes less than one second for a child to recognize his or her mom’s voice (with 97% accuracy) and...
