A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

Let It Go (for your sake)
I am teaching through the New Testament book of Philemon, and that short book of only 25 verses tells the story about a rich man (Philemon) who had a slave steal from him. It seems that the slave (Onesimus) ran away and ended up in Rome where the...
Grieve, But Do Not Despair
After the events in Las Vegas, all our hearts are filled with sorrow and grief. We mourn for those who lost loved ones, for those who were physically injured and for all those who will carry the psychological scars with them for the rest of their...
Secure Your Own Mask First
I am certain that we have all heard this announcement as we settled in for a flight. The script goes like this: Oxygen and the air pressure are always being monitored. In the event of loss of cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will automatically appear...
Confessing Sin
This last week I had the opportunity to speak at a local church’s women’s group. Out of all the things I might have addressed, I got assigned SIN! More specifically, I was asked to speak on I John 1:5-10 and the importance of confessing our sin....
Blessed Bubble
Recently, I have been having some lingering significant pulmonary issues. So last week, I had to spend seven hours in our local emergency room. While I was there, the doctors ruled out all kinds of nasty possibilities and sent me home with tons of...
Commemorations
No doubt we can all vividly remember exactly what we were doing years ago on that difficult September 11th. And if we are old enough, chances are we can also remember exactly where we were and what they were doing the day President Kennedy was shot...
Remembering
As I begin my 35th year at Stoneybrooke, I have been doing quite a bit of wandering “down memory lane.” Being the head of such an amazing school and ministering along side such amazing people has created quite a mental warehouse full of choice...
Longing for Home
On one of my summer trips, I had the opportunity to visit Alaska again (definitely my “happy place”). At almost every stream I passed, I got to see that annual trek of salmon making their way back to the place where they were hatched. It is an...
Is it a Season or a Sentence?
Every day in the criminal justice system, offenders are convicted and given sentences. Those sentences depend on the crime committed and where it happened. For example, in the state of Florida, one statistical report noted that drug offenses were...
A New Song
During my recent visit to Alaska, I had the chance to do some small boat whale watching. We were in some shore waters around Juneau and had an amazing opportunity to see humpback whales doing some “bubble net” fishing (they shoot out some bubbles,...
Failing Forward
I love basketball. College basketball is the best! When I saw this quote from Michael Jordan, it really resonated with me. He said, “I’ve missed more than nine thousand shots in my career. I’ve lost also lost three hundred games. Twenty-six times,...
A Place in This World
Michael W. Smith grappled with his own identity issues in his song “A Place in this World.” He talks about a heart that is hopeful and a head full of dreams. He was looking for a reason, his place in this world. In the seventies, Diana Ross asked...
