A Commentary on Life
Every Monday, I write a “musing.” It is a brief commentary on life seen through the lens of the scriptures. The topics and observations reflect my wide area of interests. I might comment on sports or an historical event. I might reflect on parenting skills or muse about a biography I read. The themes will range from the mundane to the theologically important.

He Makes Us Recover
In the world of exercise, after each intensive set of pushing or pulling, there is something called a rest period. Experts suggest that there be time of 30 seconds to maybe 3 minutes after the “sweating” to pause and allow the body to recover. It...
A Valuable New Benefit
Every now and again, American Express sends me a nice glossy postcard to announce that I have a valuable new benefit. It might be a new partnership they have formed that gives me yet another airport lounge to sit in. Or it might be another discount...
Open the Door
On the way to work this morning, I passed a bus stop. On the bench was an elderly man and he was sipping from a bottle of gin or vodka. It was about 7:20am and he needed some liquid encouragement. I had a conversation with myself...”I wonder how...
Praying for Challenging Teenagers
Twice this week, I have had occasion to stop and visit with friends over their very rebellious teenagers. (They both happened to be girls. I am just saying....) Both of my friends were worn down, heart broken and frustrated with their dear...
Pay Attention
I had an amazing conversation with my goddaughter after the recent shootings in Oregon. She was overwhelmed by the sadness of it all. And she was frustrated that no one had an inkling that the gunman was ready to explode in rage. We had a great...
He Calls Me Fred
My treasured assistant, Moné and I were discussing kids and the cute way they distort song lyrics. I told her about the kids in my old Sunday School class who used to refer to “The King Eternal” as the old kinky turtle. She one-upped me though. It...
How Much is Enough?
I have a friend who has often remarked to me that she wishes her family had just a little more income (and probably a little less expense). She captures the sentiment by saying she just wishes they “had enough.” With her comments as a backdrop, I...
John Harper
When the word “Titanic” is used in conversation, the first thought usually goes to the bow of the ship. With almost no effort, we picture a romantic moment complete with wind swept hair. But the sinking of the Titanic is an incredible tragedy that...
Dinner with a Friend
If you could invite anyone to have dinner with you, who might it be? What conversation would you just love to have? Maybe it would be someone whose passions are similar to yours. Or maybe, it is a major leader that made an amazing impact on...
The Value of A Personal Handwritten Note
There appears to be a growing appreciation for “the olden days.” As a recent article in the LA Times put it, “People are choosing to do the things their grandparents once had to. Some grow and can their own vegetables, some sew their own clothes...
He Held My Hand
Last week I had some minor surgery (removal of a second cataract). The first one was a breeze. I talked all the way through it with both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist. This second one was more difficult. They were measuring, ended up...
